Zlatko Josip Grgić Performs Granados’ “Danza Andaluza” on a Historic Guitar
We proudly present a new musical project by Zlatko Josip Grgić, a distinguished guitarist and interpreter known for his dedication to historical instruments and authentic classical music performance.
In his latest project, Grgić performs “Danza Andaluza” from the cycle 12 Danzas Españolas, Op. 37, No. 5 by Spanish composer Enrique Granados, on a unique 1890 guitar crafted by Antonio de Torres.
Enrique Granados (1867–1916) was one of the most prominent Spanish composers of the late Romantic era, renowned for works inspired by the traditional dances and folklore of Andalusia. His 12 Danzas Españolas (published in 1890) blend rich rhythmic patterns with melodic refinement, and No. 5 of the cycle, commonly known as “Andaluza,” is one of his most recognizable and frequently performed pieces. Performing this work on an original Antonio de Torres guitar — created by the legendary luthier considered the father of the modern classical guitar — brings a unique authenticity to the sound. Torres’ instruments played a pivotal role in the development of guitar music and were favored by great masters, including Francisco Tárrega.
The sound of this nearly 150-year-old instrument transports us back to the time when Granados’ works were first performed and interpreted.
The recording of this exceptional musical project was made possible with the support of the Croatian State Archives, which provided access to a unique historical setting for the filming.
This performance is not only an homage to Spanish musical tradition but also a rare artistic moment that celebrates the beauty of historical instruments in the hands of modern interpreters. Zlatko Josip Grgić, known for his subtle yet virtuosic style, rightfully bears the nickname “Torres’ Whisperer,” as he breathes new life into the spirit of centuries-old instruments through his playing.
