World’s First Version of Bach’s Legendary “Chaconne” with Chamber Orchestra

In yet another world first, guitarist Zlatko Josip Grgić, known as “Torres’ Whisperer,” has become the first artist to record Johann Sebastian Bach’s legendary “Chaconne” with chamber orchestra accompaniment.

The accompaniment for Bach’s Chaconne for piano and violin was originally written by Felix Mendelssohn, while the arrangement for guitar and chamber orchestra was crafted by D. Legin. In this timeless masterpiece, Grgić merges the genius of two Leipzig-based composers — Bach and Mendelssohn — who lived a century apart.

With this recording, guitarist Zlatko Josip Grgić once again demonstrates his extraordinary musicality, talent, and virtuosity — qualities that earned him the nickname “Torres’ Whisperer” from the Spanish public after a concert in Barcelona where he performed on La Invencible, Antonio de Torres’ legendary guitar declared a national treasure of Spain.

The harmonic progression of Bach’s Chaconne in D minor — C, B, A major — appearing in over 30 variations on the theme of the Sarabande, is widely interpreted as Bach’s profound spiritual address to God. Mendelssohn’s accompaniment enriches the piece with deep emotional resonance.

The video was recorded at Brežice Castle in the stunning Knight’s Hall, known for its grand frescoes depicting the four elements — earth, air, water, and fire.

The entire setting and music together contribute to the creation of the Quinta essentia — the fifth essence — which arises in a person when there is harmony between the four elements: body, mind, consciousness, and emotion. It is something deeply needed today — by each of us and the entire world.

Brežice Castle is an impressive Renaissance structure where visitors can explore the rich history of the Posavje region, from prehistoric times to the present. The Knight’s Hall, restored in 2011, is a rare and inspiring example of secular Baroque mural painting in Slovenia.

Zlatko Josip Grgić, through his profound approach to classical music, his expressive performance, and unique technique, also carefully selects locations for his music video productions.

Whether filming in Italy, Vienna, Spain, Croatia, Slovenia, or Serbia, he respectfully honors the origins and spirit of each composer’s work by connecting music with the places where it was first imagined.

It is a true delight to follow and listen to the centuries-old legacy that flows through the fingers and strings of this young virtuoso — Zlatko Josip Grgić.
